The Sapling

I tied these words to a tree

with the hope of seeing

what it was like

to finally be free.

Then I went on down

by that peaceful river

to catch a few fish

all the while making a wish

was summoned that eternal quiver.

Should it come to surprise

that in the blink of an eye

came an air so ambient

yet bitten benevolent

by another gloomy storm

so dark and warm.

As thunder kissed

this landscape of bliss

came lightning’s luck

with a crackle and a hiss

for that tree had been struck.

You may not believe it

but those words

they fell free

looking all around for me

and now I can see

these words with which I fish

the one’s forever hooked to me

are the only things

that will ever set me free.
